BMW R 1200 GS

The ride leader bike is the venerable  BMW R 1200 GS. This is certainly a bike that does not need any introduction to those who know a thing or two about long distance adventuring.

Described as the world’s greatest all-rounder, combining an unrivalled balance of on-road agility, off-road ability and touring comfort, the ‘GS’ remains unrivalled in its class. It has a twin overhead cam version of their legendary 1200cc boxer engine producing 110HP that offers supreme power and performance. This bike is the complete package for the long distance tourer and is equally at home on or off the dirt. Bikes come with ABS, ESA, and heated grips as standard.

Mick’s ride leader bike knows the terrain as he has undertaken this journey in 2010 aboard the same GS. Its reliable and has had a fairly thorough examination to make sure that it is ready for the journey.

For the 2014 Expedition the bike has been fitted for the long, bumpy roads thanks to Touratech. The route contains numerous water crossings, riding over large rocks and gravel roads. There will be hot, dusty days through the plains of Uzbekistan and there is likely to be muddy patches, ice and areas of semi-frozen ground through Siberia. In short, while the ride is not overly technical, it does present challenges and these types of conditions puts a strain on the bike’s suspension, chassis and components, etc.

Most importantly, it is vital to have the important parts protected during a ride of this length as it is virtually guaranteed that at various points along the route, challenges will present themselves and the bike will fall or be laid down.

Micks BMW R1200GS will be fitted with Zega Pro Panniers, Upper and Lower Crash Protection bars, Bash plate, Kick stand support extension, Small tail rack bag, Works long distance foot pegs, Cylinder protection, Touratech hand protectors, Hard Part steering stop, Drive shaft crash bungs, Mudguard protection, Driving lights.
